Center for the Advanced Study of India

This grant was given in support of the campaign to fund an endowment for the Center for the Advanced Study of India (CASI), founded in 1992. The endowment supports the study of contemporary India in perpetuity at Penn. CASI’s purpose is to link American and Indian academics, policymakers and professionals through interdisciplinary and collaborative programs focused on aspects of modern India. Collaboration among departments, professional schools and research centers at Penn, other universities in the United States and comparable institutions in India is facilitating joint research in broad fields of inquiry including economic transition, international security, governance in diverse societies, technology, communications and culture, and health and society. The establishment of the University of Pennsylvania Institute for the Advanced Study of India (UPIASI) in New Delhi in 1995 created a unique bi-national infrastructure to implement the Center’s programs.
